How are You Treating Your Body?

A few years ago, I wrote the blog below right after being diagnosed with Cancer.

Right now, I am in the middle of starting a new workout regimen, yea! and am excited about it. At this point I am eating mostly organic, gluten and dairy free foods as well as using my handy Ninja to whip up green smoothies (better than juicing as you keep the fiber content in your smoothies). But I have to tell you – it has been a hard few years physically, and not only realizing my need to eat well, but to add a healthy dose of exercise (especially once you hit your 40’s) into the mix is crucial. So I wanted to give everyone a chance to revisit this past blog to begin asking yourself the question of, “How are you treating your body?”

From December, 2011:

Hi everyone – I hope you all had an amazing Christmas… Here is a little bit about my health journey so far… A little over a month ago I received the news that I had breast cancer. Today I have something really specific though that I’d love to let you all know.

We are all ingesting crap.

Yes, that’s right I said it. After receiving news about my now removed breast cancer I started talking to a ton of people and doing research about nutrition and health. I was STUNNED.

Immediately Tim and I changed our entire diet.

Here is the crazy part. I feel better post cancer than I did before. With some great help from my oncology nutritionist, a fantastic lady in my life group and tons of research I found out that eating organically produced, well balanced meals leads to an overall betterment of health. Go figure, right? And it happened. We switched to all organic foods. Fruit, veggies and meat. We are even juicing. I love it. (Thanks Chuck!) I have always eaten whatever I liked, and would consistently skip by the organic produce section slightly aggravated because it cost more. If you’d like to find out about why vegetables cost more than a $1 hamburger – go and watch Food INC. Click HERE  for the site and trailer. It’s on Netflix. You will be amazed to find out how many growth hormones and chemicals we are all putting into our bodies every single day by the foods we eat.

You all – chickens are not supposed to be grown so big that they cannot walk anymore. Check it out.

I am also amazed that 1 in 8 women have breast cancer. I think we are slowly killing ourselves by treating our health casually. During this time I asked Jesus about food, and what He showed me convicted me to the core.

We have all heard about how the body is a temple, and we breeze past that fact all the time. “Do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you have received from God?  You are not your own; you were bought at a price. Therefore honor God with your body,” (1 Cor. 6:19-20). I myself have looked at that scripture and related it to so many things in ministry. I built ministries dedicated to the fact that sexual sin can ravish and destroy your body, mind and spirit, and that Jesus can redeem and restore everyone. But I missed the part about just being healthy. Then Jesus showed me this picture. We are the dwelling place of God now.

If you belong to Jesus, if Christ has made His home in your heart, then your body is the temple of God. Then God gave me a picture of the Old Testament temple. That was His dwelling place then. Then He showed me a picture of how harmful it was for a high priest to have defiled the temple. How much wreckage it caused and that now – we are the temple and we defile it everyday by what we do to our bodies and put into our bodies.

I truly believe God wants us here as long as we can to share His love with as many we can. He wants us to be spiritually strong, mentally strong but also physically strong.  By eating well and exercising, I am doing my part in the battle to live strong and healthy and honor God with my body.

He is healing my view of health. Amazing!

Call me crazy. But I can tell the difference.

What could you be doing today that could change how you honor God with your body?
