Your Playing Small Does Not Serve the World episode #22

Transcript:

Welcome to the Sandi Savage show. I am your host, Sandi Savage. This is a weekly podcast released every Tuesday, dedicated to crafting a healthy life in our mind, body, and spirit. We’re going to be talking about becoming a little better each day with simple strategic steps and how to actually achieve the dreams we have. Maybe you’re someone who doesn’t even dream anymore.

Let’s find that fierce in you again. Oh my gosh. So I am a first-time mom of a newborn at the age of 50, a wellness and business coach, a ninth generation Kentuckian. And I love all things crafty. I mean, give me all the yarn, please. And I have the most amazing husband, Tim Savage. So thanks for listening.

You all let’s get started. How are you feeling today? Oh my gosh. I hope you’re having a fantastic day. Let me tell you what I am. So, so excited to be back with you guys. Podcasting. Now we’re doing 2022. Can you believe it is 2022? Like that blows my mind and oh my gosh. You all. It’s going by so fast.

I mean, I look at my sweet little girl and she is growing up so fast. I can’t even take it. She has two teeth in right now. What? She’s four and a half months. Oh wow. I saw those little teeth come in and I went, oh baby, you’re growing up so fast. Oh guys, it’s 2022. And I believe that this is going to be a fantastic year.

Like I believe it, you know, a couple of weeks ago I saw this quote and I want to start out today by reading it to you. It, it struck such a nerve with me that I cried. I was like, oh my gosh, this is such truth. So our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate. Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure.

It is our light, not our darkness that most frightens us. We ask ourselves, who am I to be brilliant and gorgeous, talented, fabulous, actually, who are you not to be? You are a child of God. Your playing small does not serve the world. There is nothing enlightening about shrinking so that other people won’t feel unsure around you.

We were born to make manifest the glory of God that was within us. It is not just in some of us. It is in everyone as we let our own light shine. We consciously give other people permission to do the same as we’re liberated from our own fear, our presence automatically liberates others. That’s a quote from Marianne Williamson. So I read that and it stirred something in my heart that had been asleep for a long time.

You know, I think that a lot of times we look at our lives and we’re consistently told to be content where we are just be content, just accept where we are. I think there’s a great, big difference between feeling joy, where we are, and at being happy in the day to day. But you know what? I don’t want to be content with my life as it is.

I know that there is glory to glory and that means that the best is yet to come and that I can be in a place of going. I am grateful and happy where I am right now, but I sure as heck am not going to sit in apathy that I don’t need to improve anything. You know, that, that happened to me with my health.

You know, I had a baby on the way and I’m like, you know, I want to be all body positive and accept myself the, you know, as I am and all that, but I didn’t feel good. I didn’t have energy. I had inflammation in my joints. It hurt, it hurt walking upstairs. And I knew that. Yeah,

sure. I could. I could, you know, put on the I’m content with where I am. I am, I am being very positive about, I love myself right now. And let me tell you what I didn’t, because I knew that there was a better version of me out there. One that wasn’t in constant pain or one that wasn’t huffing and puffing,

trying to walk up a flight of steps. I knew that I had to do something, you know, the same thing as has happened to me before where I wasn’t content and an area. And I was told I should be, you should just accept that as it is. And that’s what I want to say today. I do not believe that. I do not believe you have to just sit and accept things.

There are things that, that we cannot change. That is true. There are things that are completely out of our control, but you know what? There is more in our life that we’re in control of than we sometimes want to think we are in control of. And those things that we are in control of, we can change. You know, I put up a quote from our 12 step group and the serenity prayer.

Now the serenity prayer, you know, if you’re in any of the 12 step meetings, you know, we usually say the serenity prayer of, you know, God grant me the serenity to accept the things that cannot change the courage to change the things can. And the wisdom to know the difference. You know, it is ingrained, you know, those words,

you like, you repeat those words, like a mantra I’ve got over 25 years sober. And that phrase has helped me a ton, but there is a longer, you know, that serenity prayer, there’s a longer serenity prayer there, original serenity prayer. What, what that little phrase comes from. I don’t want to read it to you too. God give me grace to accept with serenity.

The things that cannot be changed, the courage to change the things which should be changed and the wisdom to distinguish the one from the other living one day at a time enjoying one moment at a time accepting hardship as a pathway to peace taking as Jesus did this sinful world, as it is. And not as I would have it trusting that you will make all things right.

If I surrender to your will so that I may be reasonably happy in this life and Supreme, really with you forever in the next. Amen. So there’s a little bit of a tweak from the original written prayer and what is said today, you know, of course, you know, God grant me the serenity to accept the things. I cannot change the courage to change things can and wisdom to know the difference.

But if you go to the original, it says, God, give me grace to accept with serenity. The things that cannot be changed and courage to change the things which should be changed. And I think that that is a really important difference. The courage to change the things which should be changed. And there are things in our life, friends that should be changed if you’re in a situation that it is possible to get out of,

get out of it. If you thoroughly dislike your job, look for another one. If you don’t like where you live, change it. If your goals are too big or small, change it, what you put into your body, you know, and let me say this, and I’m going to do a whole podcast on this. I believe that diet culture is so toxic,

but I do believe in healthy culture. So the things that you actually put in your body, it does matter. And there are things that sometimes we should change about what we put in our bodies so that we can run at the highest level of energy and strength that we have. I’m not there yet. I’m working on that, but I had to start somewhere.

You know, we have to start somewhere. It was something that I was not happy with. It was something that I was not content with. And I knew that I had to change something. I knew that I should change something. So you all, I want to encourage you. If there is something in your life that should be changed, do not sit idly by and not do something about it.

Now change sometimes takes a long time very, small incremental things that make an improvement. Daily things typically don’t change overnight, but you can start somewhere. You can start with small, small changes, like people who I guide in their wellness journey, I would say, oh my gosh, start with water. Can you just put more water in your body?

You know, you should at least drink half your body weight in ounces, minimally daily. That is a small change that you can make that will actually make you feel incredibly better. So the things that you want to have different in your life, the things that you go, man, I want to be for free from this thing, friends, you can do it.

You can do it. You can, you can actually look at something and go, I have peace, but I am going to change this because I know it is not the absolute best. And don’t you want to live out that brilliant, fabulous life. Because again, everyone is born to make manifest the glory of God. We’re born to let our light shine.

We are born to help others get liberated from fear. And if you’re not feeling that in your life, gosh, reach out like let’s have a conversation. You can DM me. You can send me an email at coach@sandisavage.com or podcast@sandisavage.com or Sandi Savage on Instagram. Oh, you know, I’m not that hard to find you all Sandi Savage with an i, let’s have a conversation about it because I believe that we are being sold a lie that we have to feel okay.

We have to just change our viewpoint and love everything that is in our life. And I think that we’re being fed a great big lie, because I think that actually making changes to improve our life. Whether that’s your health, your job, your relationships, your finances, whatever that looks like, gosh, let’s make those changes. Let’s do it together.

I took a big step and I enrolled with a mentor for the next 12 weeks. That is like, I’m going to take you all along this journey with me, because it is something that I believe is going to shift something in me. The things that need to be changed in me, the breakthroughs that I need to have in my own personal life and my mindset.

Like I can’t wait. I can’t wait to tell you all more about it. I, I will be starting with her next week. And so I will give you some more info when all that happens, because I want, I want you all to know this journey because I really think that if I help just one person go, you know what? If she can take these steps to do the hard work,

to change things in her life that she’s not satisfied with, then I could do it too. And I want you to have a full, beautiful, amazing, adventurous, wild, passionate, fierce life. I want that for you. I want it for, for me. I want that for my daughter. For my husband, my family,

my friends. So let’s just step forward together. Let’s step forward in taking, let’s just take that first small step. Reach out to somebody say, Hey, this is something I would like improvement on. And can you help me keep accountable? And if you don’t have anybody that you can do that too, you can come to me, find me and let’s talk about it.
