I’ve been thinking about the serenity prayer today. God, grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, the courage to change the things I can and the wisdom to know the difference. In recovery you have it hard wired into your brain and I’ve been reminded of it recently.
.
There are some things in life you just can’t change. You can do what you can, pray and accept. Someone’s health, a pet getting sick, a circumstance in someone’s life that you can’t change for them but wish you could.
.
Then there are things you CAN change. Your job, where you live, your goals, what you put in your body and how you take care of it. Your willingness to do the hard thing. They all take courage.
.
Today I pray for wisdom for all of us to know the difference between the two and for you to trust that God will make all things right.
.
You may not have heard the full serenity prayer before. Here it is for you for today:
.
God, give me grace to accept with serenity the things that cannot be changed, Courage to change the things which should be changed, and the Wisdom to distinguish the one from the other.
.
Living one day at a time,
Enjoying one moment at a time,
Accepting hardship as a pathway to peace, Taking, as Jesus did,
This sinful world as it is, Not as I would have it, Trusting that You will make all things right, If I surrender to Your will, So that I may be reasonably happy in this life, And supremely happy with You forever in the next.
.
Amen.
